I am going to Hergest Ridge in a few months. it seems.

I am interested in others' experiences. And how long it takes to get there from the Cotswolds, or Cardiff. Thanks!

From either the Cotswolds or Cardiff you are likely to have to get a train to Hereford (as far as I can see the nearest), then a bus from there to Kington. From Kington you are on foot!!

I would recommend that you visit Bradnor Hill while you're in the area. It's approximately north of Hergest Ridge on the other side of the A44. Mike lived at 'The Beacon' which is the house adjacent to the golf club, and I understand that a member off this forum has recently purchased it. Unfortunately it wasn't me!

is The Beacon the house in the middle of this:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps.....029048

i.e. the three grey roofs in a row just to the right of the words "Offa's Dyke path"? I walked that path in '78 or '79, can't remember exactly when, but clearly after Mike had moved out, and at the time I had no idea where "The Beacon" was , and sadly have no particular memories of that bit (I do recall the glorious walk over Hergest Ridge however!)

Yes it's almost immediately below the words 'Kington Golf Club'.

When I load that screen, I find Kington Golf Club as the label for a large building, with carparks directly adjacent on both sides... is this still the Beacon?

Yes the Beacon is lower down the hill from the golf club car parks.
As you ascend Bradnor Hill from the main road you will cross over a cattle grid towards the top. The Beacon will be visible on the left.
Have fun!

The Beacon is clearly visible in this video:

https://youtu.be/PpADBFFZGH0?t=130

and (contrary to my earlier post) it is the building in the centre here:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps.....029048

and not the building to its West with the three dark grey roofs - you can see the white chimney in the centre and the balcony as the lighter grey feature on the south side

I'd forgotten about that video. I did something similar a few years ago but I can't find it on youtube. Anyway, it's a beautiful location, and well worth a visit.

The first part of Part 2 would actually make very good walking music!
