jonnyw Group: Members Posts: 522 Joined: Oct. 2005 Posted: June 02 2007, 21:36 Today i spent my usual weekly 3-5 hour hang out in my local guitar shop. Today they had a Gibson SG junior for me to play, but honestly, I didnt feel all that impressed, The neck is very very thick, and the one p90 seems very un-versatile. I felt that I would love one as a one off, but I would need something else for added versatility.. They priced it at something like £400, wich i felt was fair enough for a gibson... but does anyone here own one? what do you make of its versatlilty, or is it awfully one sided. I own a 1996 Gibson '61 reissue, and to be honest, I dont really know what to make of the junior, i both love and hate its neck in comparison with my own. And what of the p90's? This week I will be replacing my Gibsons PAF bridge with a PRS humbucker out of a custom 22... im not a big fan of gibson stock.. Is the P90 any good? See... im considering buying this one if i manage to save for a while. And, did mike use any other guitars during his time with the SG's? -------------- Grand piano. Reed and pipe organ. But at 400£, I'm curious to know what brand it was? P90's are only any good if they arte from the 50's and early 60's as the metal quality used made them distinctive in my opinion. If you get a newly made P60 (or indeed any pick up) it will be manufactured from modern steel and the purity will most likely (if not definitely) be different (better) as the manufacturing techniques ahve improved. I guess your SG Junior in question here is a new one - because second hand old ones go for £3000 pounds plus. I have played both Mike's old SG Junior (curtisy of Yanouch) and I have Mike's old LP junior TV from 1957 and they are both simmilar and have a fantastic sounding pick up. Vesatile?  No. - better get a PRS C24 for that (but I know you got one like me (;))  ) Good early Mike like sound - Definitely. Probably not what you wanted to hear! emac Group: Members Posts: 66 Joined: May 2002 Posted: June 10 2007, 23:19 Whilst the new sg juniors will sort of get the early mike sound, they do have a different vibe to older ones. I had a new one and it was good but I've stuck with my old one and recently got one of the epiphone ones as a basher. If you cannot afford an old one either get a new one, or an epiphone. Ps. strats sound good with P-90s in the bridge position too! emac. Back to top

emac Group: Members Posts: 66 Joined: May 2002 Posted: June 12 2007, 08:20 Well.... I paid the equivilent of about 70 pounds for mine. (ebay) They are cheap with a bolt on neck and alder plywood body. However they play well and the sound and general vibe of these little epis are quite close to a vintage Sg junior. The acoustic tone of the guitar is very loud, (louder than a real one) but perhaps a little less smooth and the pickup is a bit brighter than the original but with less high mids (put that one down to the use of ceramic ferrite magnets rather than the originals Alinco magnets. If you have a Muddy sounding amp stick with the standard Epi pickup, if you have a nice clean Fender style amp, upgrade the pickup to a GFS alnico P-90 or somthing that wont break the bank (what I plan to do) The tuners are cheap but work well enough (the originals are cheap but work... sort of..) The epi SG junior will get the vibe closer to anything this side of a bank loan for a vintage one. Don't get me wrong, the Gibson Sg junior that was made recently can be a good guitar but they are just not the resonant tone creatures that the early ones were and the cheap Epi knock offs can be. Ps I think you can still get the Epi Sg junior new as part of a Guitar and Amp package. Well, the one included in the pack is withouth the P90 so it's less interesting I feel because it's a part of what I'm looking for... I was bidding on one and promised myself not to go over £75, and someone beat me to it and got it for £77 Years ago i used Epiphone and i must say they were some of the best guitars i ever bought for the money.
