Hello,

I'm really into this guitar at the moment and I've seen that Mike Oldfield used one. But I really wonder on which albums and which songs... Is someone know more about it?

Thanks...

AnaoN.

Hi Anaon,

from what I can tell the Gibson Les Paul Custom, the so called `Black Beauty´ dates from 1968 and shows up only in the Boxed booklet as well as on the cover of the German and Spanish 7" Portsmouth singles (holding it in his hand on the latter).

So we can see that this guitar has been in use in Througham Slad probably between 1976 and 1978. I still wonder what happened to it for it never turned up since.

Cheers

Chris

Hi,

Thanks for your reply...

In fact, I saw the pictures of the Ommadawn instruments and we can already see the Black Beauty... I suppose that he used it on Ommadawn but maybe not... I wonder...

I think the picture you're refering to is the picture taken in the barn of Througham Slad with all instruments around Mike.
This picture was probably taken after January 1976, so it's difficult to say if all these instruments were already in Mike's collection in the first 6-8 monthes of 1975, when he was recording Ommadawn.

(Mike moved in Througham in the fall of 1975 but his studio was only finished in his barn in the beginning of 76)

For the recording of Ommadawn Mike mainly used a 1962 Gibson SG/Les Paul Junior which was a replacement for a 1966 Gibson SG/Les Paul Junior Type II that was stolen from the Beacon along with other instruments.

I very much doubt that the Black Beauty was used for recording Ommadawn.

There is a guitar that looks like a black Gibson Les Paul custom in the North Point video during the guitar solo.  I originally thought it was the Gibson Ls6 guitar in that video when I first saw it 5 years ago but Korgscrew thought it looked too small for an Ls6 but it has other Gibson features such as the single cutaway body and humbucking pickups for the bridge and neck positions which could mean its the Gibson Les Custom in North Point.

The Black L6S was sold in the early 80's in a charity auction at Abbey Road so it's not that one.
The Black Beauty is a bit of a wierd one. It's definately one of the re-issues (the knobs are those horrid plasticky ribbed things and not the speed knobs (ooh-er missus) of the originals)from 68 onwards.No-one's really sure what it was used on.I think First Excursion sounds like a full on Humbucker sound but others say it's the L6s.
As for the Northpoint vid i honestly don't know and i've pondered this myself. The headstock shape kind of suggests an early PRS but he didn't get one till around the time of Earth Moving, the first one (PRS Signature)coming from Chandlers in Kew.
Looking in the instruments section Mike has gone through a lot of guitars and not just the ones usually associated with him so it could be one of those.

That's very nice too. What make is it?It looks like a 70's Ibanez. They did some really good copies back then. One of my dream guitars is an Les Paul/SG Junior exactly like Mike's but with a thinner neck as the originals have necks like tree trunks!I know the magazine you have there as i have it too.

I didn't know the verb "show off" in English but now I know!

I was sure that you was going to write something about this picture...

"show off" is not the right word. "Proud" is better"

:D

it's a small French brand called Custom 77 who makes them :

Cheap guitars but they sound really great! And there's not a lot of brands who makes SG Junior copy...

About the real one, I wouldn't even dare to play on a vintage SG Junior and even less on Mike Oldfield's one  :O or maybe for studio works...
