"Flowers of the Forest"  sounds exactly like the Scottish Anthem "Flower of Scotland " is this correct ??  I would
quite like to see Mike do a attempt at a New version
UK National Anthem as in my opinion the current one
is a Stinker !! also a English one !! just to see what he
would come up with out of interest !! :)

Yes it's a very famous and traditional Scottish piece, I heard it played on a James bond film (The world is not enough, when they're in Ediburgh)  :)

I picture a "monk music" drum loop with lush synthesizer backgrounds with the melody first played by a synth going "ooooh ooooh ooooh", and later doubled by his trademark whiny guitar. Who said a National Anthem can't chill you out?

I've just been listening to FOTF, not sure where it originates from, but I think it's Scottish in origin.

I know FOTF is often used as one  of the  pieces  of music when our fallen soldiers , (Scottish Regiments??) are repatriated from Afghanistan to the UK.  (However I feel not one more  British soldier's life should be wasted in that utterly and pointless war, what is going on in Afghanistan poses no threat to national security).

Getting politcical aside, I think FOTF is a beautiful song, but makes me cry if I hear it as a song played for the repatriation of one of our Fallen Heroes!!!!

FOTF is a beautiful piece of music. The bagpipes as played by the Dragoon Guards at Mikes concert in Edinburgh.. Brilliant! Deb

Found this whilst trying to find FOTF on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPBcdIZaQzw  (warning for those not used to it contains a lot of "f**king swearing   ).

I think this is actors playing the part of Black Watch Soldiers, the piper plays FOTF.   I know there's a DVD of this that comes with a documentary on Black Watch Soldiers and their families.  I haven't seen it as it would probably have me in floods of tears, also the contempt which our government hold our heroes in     :(  :O .

Just as a point of interest -
Flowers of the Forest was also played at a couple of football matches after the death of Princess Diana:
At Fulham's Craven Cottage (al Fayed link there)
and at the Scotland match in Aberdeen a couple of days later.
Both played by a lone piper.

I recently listened to the radio cadena 100 interview from 1996 and i was very surprised that Mike mentioned that Sally Oldfield is singing on Flowers Of The Forest.

"I's actually my sister singing on Flowers Of The Forest. I asked her to imagine...you know on front of ships they have a figure head.. I asked her to imagine she was one of these things and was out in the sea and she was singing like a celtic warrior goddess"

And it's so obviously... why haven't I noticed it before !!!

St Paul - that's a good piece of info ... never knew that -  that she had to sing it like she was on the statue on the front of the ship!!!
