It's something like...

I couldn't explain
It's hard enough to know
Will we ever again
Be true when the nights grow old?

Darkness can be so long
And bright lights be so cold
Would it all be the same
Wherever I may go?

Where you sleep so soft
The blue night draws in nearer
How can we ever be lost
In candle light so clear?

When the night's on fire
One more hour until the break of day
Hold on to your heart's desire
When you see one bird
The other one's never far away
And the two can fly
Much higher

You who travelled so far
Like a seed among the air
Somewhere listen we're lost
In politics and prayer
You who passed every test
A thousand times or more
will be forever praised
You've opened every door.

Where you sleep so soft
The blue night draws in nearer
How can we ever be lost
In candle light so clear?

When the night's on fire
One more hour until the break of day
Hold on to your heart's desire
When you see one bird
The other one's never far away
And the two can fly
Much higher

Where you sleep so soft
The blue night draws in nearer
How can we ever be lost
In candle light so clear?

You who've travelled so far
Hold to your heart's desire
You shine like the brightest star
Oh when the night's on fire

All the rest is just sections of that repeated - you should be able to figure it out smile

I'm not 100% certain about the 'Like a seed among the air' line - it doesn't actually make sense wink. 'A seed upon the air' would make more sense, but the word sounds like it has an M in it to me...

What is early Nights? I've never heard of it. Was it made by Mike?

Early Nights is a unreleased demo (1987 ?)

For me it's a medley about the Islands CD !

earlynights is just the shortened filename for the mp3. It's the early demo version of "When the Night's on Fire" sung by Barry Palmer. It used to be on the source of secrets website.

Just a few corrections:

Yes, it IS "seed upon the air" not "among"
"Darkness can be so long"="dark nights can be so long"
"one more hour until the break of day"="one more hour 'til the break of day" (hour sung with two syllables)

I'm not just nitpicking though. You've done a great job!

It's shame that this version didn't get re-recorded for the album. Who else prefers it to the final version?

It sounds like a cross between "Islands" the title track and "When The Night's On Fire".  :)  :)

I've always liked the song, it's clearly from the Pictures in the Dark era, since it is a fairlight track.

If the song were on the album, it would have been my favourite. The vocals are superb, and there's real feeling in this song. I love the lyrics too.

I just love: 'I couldn't explain, it's hard enough to know...'
  :)

Such emotional lyrics. Especially the line 'how can we ever be lost in candle light so clear'. It's a shame this sublime line didn't make it in the final song.

'Where you sleep so soft' -> shouldn't that be 'while you sleep so soft'? It's about a time span, not a location.

If only Mike would go back to the deluxe editions, we might get a release of this song.
