In David Bedford's descography, one may find following entry:

Quote

Mike Oldfield - "Don Alfonso" (Virgin single VS117) - also on compilation "V" (VD2502) (with Mike Oldfield, Chris Cutler, and Kevin Ayers) (vocals, piano accordion) (1975)

It is not clear to me, though, wether David *composed* or *performed* vocals. Even if he performed, he may have been only in the "choir".

According to the sleeve notes of the 7" and several Mike Oldfield's discography, it's David Bedford

I think I asked the same question (about the Don Al. singer) some time ago, either here or on IRC. The answer I got was that Bedford did lead vocals, Mike and Sally did the backing, Kevin Ayers played wine bottles and Mike played everything else. :)

Oh - dont get me wrong - so do I - it's very funny.  My son Fin is well into Tubularbells - he can play it (the intro and the vivian stanshall end bit) on piano and guitar very well.  but he heard Don Alphonso for the fisrt time today in the car - and you should have seen the look on his face  :/ , he just said - "Has this CD got Blue Peter on it?"  Ray

It sounds like something one would play while drunk.

Ehm, don't you guys think that vocals as they are may be part of what I would call "artistic concept" of the song? When one sees the video, it's quite easy to realise that the whole "Don alfonso" thing is just *meant* to be grotesque... Same thing when you take a look at the lyrics. That's it's idea.

At least that's how I understand this piece...

cheers
