...songs that do your nut in -

"All Around The World" by Lisa Stansfield -

'Been around the world and I, I
I can't find my baby,
I don't know why, why he's gone away '

YES YOU DO, LISA! Allow me to refer you to your own words, not 30 seconds ago, when you said (and I quote):-

'We had a quarrel, and I let myself go
I said so many things, things he didn't know
And I was oh, oh so bad'

And then, and then, LISA, you go on to say

'I did too much lying, wasted too much time'

So you do know, you know exactly why he's gone away, so you should just concentrate on finding him to apologise. Not singing that BS trying to make us feel sorry for you, when clearly it is all YOUR FAULT.

I feel better for that. Anyone else?

Yeah, but which ones bug you?

Another -

The Reflex is a lonely child
He's waiting by the Park
The Reflex is in charge of finding
Treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover, isnt that bizarre?
Every little thing the Reflex does
Leaves you answered with a question mark

?

:/

Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak is a good one - and it's suprising how few people have noticed:

"Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in this town"

Somewhere?  Well, let's all have a guess. It wouldn't be at the jail, by any chance, would it?

But for sheer nonsense this, by Enya, deserves a prize:

"It must be this or that way,
it's one way or the other,
It must be one direction -
It could be, on reflection."

This one starts off well -

Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you

(but rapidly goes downhill ...)

Yeah they were all yellow

(then ..)

Cause you were all yellow.

Please forgive me for insisting once again on this, but this song bugs me particularily because the melody is extremely beautiful (IMHO), but the lyrics are extemely silly, always IMHO. I'm not even saying what it is - it's very clear by the lyrics I quote.

Have you ever been to North Point
To spend your time and pray?

No, Anita, I haven't, because North Point (or Northpoint) is a PRISON!!

The prison walls are dark and cold and grey.
The writing on the wall at North Point
Speaks to a silent room.
They shut the bars down, leave you to the gloom.

[ Chorus ]

How could we get any closer?
So high is the wire and the guards won't listen,
They won't believe me.
And then it all came back. [?????????]
Somewhere far above has a new day risen?
Way beyond the searchlight,
Comes alive, comes alive.

Can someone please tell me WHAT exactly comes alive?? :D

Then on a bright day at North Point
The gate was open wide.
They chanced to look at what was inside.
There were a million stars at North Point,
And from the silent tomb,
They took it to the heart and left for the moon.

WHAT did they take to the heart? WHY did they leave for the moon? And WHO are "they" anyway??

I know that Mike never was a good lyricist, but here I think that he reached his Nadir of silliness. And the worst thing about the song is, as I said, that the music is fantastic...

@ Milamber: "Near a tree by a river there's a hole in the ground, where an old man of Aran [in Ireland, Russia or Azerbaijan??] goes around and around; and his smile is a beacon in the veil of the night, for a strange kind of fashion there's a wrong and a right." Yes, this is pure nonsense. There may be various allusions to war and military things all through the lyrics, but most of it is nonsense. Nik Kershaw himself admitted it on his website: « "The Riddle" is nonsense, rubbish, bollocks, the confused ramblings of an 80's popstar». So there you have it. :)

@ wiga: ah, Coldplay, eh? What about "I've seen Jerusalem bells a-ringing, Roman cavalry choirs were singing; be my hero, my sword and shield..." etc. The Romans never went to Jerusalem, for starters. The Crusaders did.

@ Sweep: to me it's no wonder that Enya writes nonsense. There are lots and lots and lots of places where she uses words for their sounds rather than for their meanings. Have you ever heard "Only If..." ?

Sweet Caroline woah woah woah
Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would.

What?

@ wiga: I think Neil Diamond meant that he thought good times would never come. But yes, it's a very convoluted way to say it. :D Re. "Jailbreak", maybe no-one knows where the prison actually is. :)

Ah, by the way, here's more nonsense from Enya and from her lyricist, Roma Ryan:

Let me sail, let me sail, let the Orinoco flow,
let me reach, let me beach by the shores of Tripoli...

I think Roma has a very muddled sense of geography. The Orinoco is in Venezuela - how can she possibly reach Lybia from there???

And what about Joni Mitchell, who "dreamed [she] saw bombers riding shotgun in the sky" ??? It's great as a visual metaphor, but bombers CAN'T ride.

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again

See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the norfolk broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns

Random lyrics pushing it on this one David - irritating me.

:(

I know when to go out
And when to stay in
Get things done
I catch a paper boy
But things don't really change
I'm standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

Okay..

Funnyly enough I don't find this one annoying.

:)

@ kazav: okay, they did, but the Coldpay lyrics still don't make sense, because there were no bells a-ringing in the temple destroyed by the Romans. And they were most certainly not signing - as far as I know they only sang during parades and when off-duty. :)
