DISCOVERY is one of my favourite Mike Oldfield albums.
I wondered how an ultimate rerelease of that album would look like.

Which bonus tracks should be on it?
Should we include lyrics, liner notes and some nice photographs?

TRACKLIST

To France
Poison Arrows
Crystal Gazing
Tricks of the Light
Discovery
Talk about Your Life
Saved by a Bell
The Lake

To France (extended)
In the Pool
Tricks of the Light (instrumental)
Afghan
Pictures in the Dark (full)
Legend

I would leave out Bones and The Trap.
Two more experimental tracks that refer more
to The Killing Fields in my opinion than to Discovery.

In the Pool with vocals. It was a Barry/Maggie duett from what I've heard.

Didn't know that existed.Though it was just an instrumental.Sounds to me like it was concieved as an instrumental too.Interesting.
Sorry but the instrumental version of Trick Of The Light sucks!Sounds like one of those awfull singles from the 80's where as cop out they just removed the vocals. Here the vocals are removed and replaced by a frankly crap keyboard sound playing the melody.

Aaaah, you forgot to add imho..You better hope Nightspore`s not looking,or he`ll start going all Aussie slang on yer.

Actualy I`ve never heard it I don`t think, but it doesn`t sound too exciting.Personaly I wouldn`t like to see too many of those "80`s re-mix type throwaways" passed off as extra tracks myself.Maybe there are a few notable exceptions I suppose, but at this moment in time I`m struggling to think of any..Err imho that is!

I agree on the instrumental Tricks of the Light sounding
as a very cheap way to jump on the 80s extended single release.

The extended To France isn't that strong either.
But the extra instrumental break is worth listening to.

Thing is I like to combine a-side and b-side of a single.
It's like In the Pool works best if it follows To France etc ...

The 7" edit of Pictures in the Dark is obviously
cut down from the 12", which might be the original one.
I prefer the 12" version to the 7" version.

Aha you are right Dirk. The instrumental of TOTL sucks IMHO!!!Pictures... i agree with you on Dazzler. The solo was obviously longer on the 12" making the 7"  version sound cut down and there's the extra verse in the 12".

BTW I love these new threads! Thank you Dazzler for starting them. Can't help but wondering if you're secretly involved in the Mercury re-issue program!  :O

My intention was to show you how I make my Oldfield CDs.
And to give the other users the chance to add their favourite
bonus tracks, live cuts and unreleased bits and pieces.

I would like to write some reviews on the albums too.
But I don't see a proper review thread with each album, if I'm right.
I once wrote some reviews about the Virgin albums on an old
and long forgotten Mike Oldfield website about 15 years ago I guess ...

Are there any other deluxe releases sheduled yet?

Compiled it yesterday from mp3 to CD
using the tracklist from my very first post.

It sounded ... brilliant again.

For me there's no doubt that Discovery
has the best vocal numbers Mike ever wrote.
Saved by a Bell is a bit cheap (Why is it Mike can't record
an album without referring to Tubular Bells?) and Tricks of the Light
might be a bit ... err ... light-hearted.

But To France (a bit of Steeleye Span), Poison Arrow
(acoustic hardrock bits), Crystal Gazing (a touch of Clannad),
Discovery (hardrock like hardrock should be) and Talk about Your Life
(a clever link to To France and yet a proper song on its own)
are amongst the best tracks he has ever written (if not the best).

The Lake, In the Pool and Afghan are outstanding instrumentals.
And the addition of Pictures in the Dark and Legend really works.

Yummy yummy yummy ...

Sources I used were the HDCD from my brother,
the Elements box track Afghan and the instrumental Tricks of the Light,
the 1993 Moonlight Shadow CDS rerelease for In the Pool and The Platinum Collection
for the extended versions and ... Legend, which is strangely enough on my copy as a hidden track.

A remark on the HDCD version of Discovery.
The timing of the track division between To France
and Poison Arrow differs from the vinyl timing.
I think the vinyl seduction is more accurate.

Mmm?? I'm wondering if you're involved in the Mercury re-issue programme.

If you are, nothing wrong with that - but it would make sense.

I'm not involved at all. I wish I was ...

In fact I was very disappointed by the way Virgin Records remastered his backcatalogue.
I was disappointed that the HDCD versions didn't have any bonustracks at all.
Some of his non-album tracks are amongst the best he has ever written.

The Elements boxset is one of the most awkward boxes I have ever seen.
Using some unreleased tracks, but neglecting the best bits.

I was glad to hear his backcatalogue moved to Universal.
But now I noticed he did a brand new mix of Tubular Bells and
reworked the "original" bonus material ... I'm almost angry about it.

So I decided to re-burn my own Oldfield deluxe albums.
Using bonustracks from the official releases ... puzzling it together.
I burnt them for the first time, eight years ago I guess.
So I'm rereleasing my self-mastered and compiled albums.

And dream of better days when Universal releases
ORIGINAL work with interesting liner notes, lyrics and nice pics.

:D Nightspore out of curiosity do Australians really say "rack off"?As in "Rack Off Fisher"..Or is it just some made up phrase thing for the decency of the tea-time soap operas?

@Dazzler yeah I`m sure many of us thought you might be in here "testing the waters" from mercury so`s to speak. But even though you`re not, you`ve certainly started the ball rolling on some very interesting threads...Certainly some food for thought when the real re-masters come around.

Dirk, yes, definitely. It's quite common. Though with the f word becoming more socially acceptable, it is fading into the background a bit.

I have never heard this version of In the Pool but here's my source.
If it was just "tried out" with vocals chances are that it's incomplete and un-releaseable. Who knows?

Bones --- related (comes from) 'Islands'.

The Trap --- as far as I know, was just recorded during 'Pictures in the Dark' sessions, not being taken out from any album.

Really?Bones sounds like an outtake from The Killing Fields (the sounds used on a Fairlight CMI are very similar) and the title seems to relate to the scene in the film were Pran is walking through the Killing Field and stumbles and discovers he's walking on skeletons.

That sounds like an Alice Cooper cover version of "Walking on Sunshine"!
