On Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, track The Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine, starting at around 30:40 on the CD, there is the guitar riff that sounds exactly like the "Layla" sample used by Oldfield in his 1979 single Guilty.  It sounds like the exact same recording.

No, because there wasn't sampling available to Jeff Wayne when he made his musical version of the War of the Worlds.

But also, look at the release dates:
Layla came out in March 1971,
War of the Worlds came out in June 1978,
Guilty came out in November 1979.

Hmm...good point, I didn't stop to think that Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds came out before Guilty.  Nevertheless, it sounds like the exact
same sample in both songs...Perhaps Mike Oldfield lifted it from the former.
