A very clever man with such significance in the works we all talk about.  So much of his work that I've yet to explore, but what I know of, I like.

Tati - have you or anyone else go a hold of the latest issue of Classic Rock Presents Prog?  I baulked at the cover price after the temptation of seeing an interview with Mr Bedford (to mark the Nurses Song With Elephants re-issue I guess) with Mike namechecked on the back cover.  There was no copy left where I usually see them when I looked this morning.

Very sorry to hear about this. A sad loss.

My thoughts are with all those who were close to him.

BASCA, PRS and others have been reported that David Bedford passed away aged 74 on Saturday 1st October 2011 following a short illness.

A prolific composer and musician, David is well known to the Mike Oldfield community for his involvement in a number of Mikes works including orchestrating and arranging the Orchestral Tubular Bells and Orchestral Hergest Ridge. He arranged and conducted orchestrations on a number of Mikes albums including Hergest Ridge, Incantations and The Killing Fields. David also played and provided vocals for a couple of Mikes singles - Don Alfonso and Speak (Tho' You Only Say Farewell).

This news passed to us by Tati and Chris

I read the note from Tati late last night and am quite stunned by the news. I was lucky enough to meet David on a couple of occasions and he was extremely courteous and kind. He was very forthcoming with information to satisfy my enquiring mind and I still have the tape of our interview. I followed his career from the time he did the orchestral versions of Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge in 1975 and saw him on the concert platform a couple of times. He will really be missed by a large group of devotees and musicians whos lives were enriched over many years by his diverse compositions. R.I.P. David - the music lives on.

I read an interview with him in the latest Classic Rock Presents Prog just last night!

In it he talked quite a lot about his work with Mike Oldfield. Sad to hear this. :(

for the record, copied from here...

Quote (Mike Oldfield @ October 04 2011, BASCA website)
I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of my friend David Bedford. His support for my music in the early 1970s, before Tubular Bells was successful, gave me the will to carry on making instrumental music even when my work was rejected by all record companies. He was a great composer and wonderful human being. Thanks so much David.

Having been in contact with David recently regarding my transcription of Amarok it comes as a big shock. I even sent him a follow up email dated 3rd October obviously before knowing that he had already passed away.

Very sad and want to thank him for the time he did spend in replying to my emails.

He was still musically active - as I could notice on his last interview for Classic Rock presents Prog.He was getting involved in a Roy Harper's gig at the Royal Festival Hall next november...

...having a uncle who was born on the same year as David's,it was a real shock to me,but that's life.
