Hi Soupdragon

Yes - I get some similarity. I love Rule the World - always makes me want to get my cello out.

Maybe Tubular Bells is why I love it - subconsciously.

It's much more inspired by Joe Satriani than Tubular Bells.

Very interesting to me because I always prefer instrumentals, expect here, I really like better Coldplay's interpretation.

Apart from the fact that the song's title is "Viva la Vida", I agree with Olivier up here that they stole from Satch [5 notes... that's not a big theft after all!! :D] and they didn't steal anything from Mike. How can anyone hear the opening of TB in that song, well, it really makes me wonder.

I didn't hear a similarity, but maybe there's something about the jerky rhythm that's shared.

Wiga - I didn't know you played the cello: or are you just stringing us along?

I get some similarity when I follow the cello, but it's not in the sequence of notes; - "Viva La Vida" is; -C# 4 times D# 5 times G# 4 times  F 5 times.

Not sure what it is - the time and rhythm perhaps?

(I play violin and cello)

I've seen the nature of the bell debated elsewhere, not necessarily in a Mike Oldfield context, but in case Wiga's posting of the official video hasn't convinced, here's Coldplay live-ish.

Mind you, the reason I recorded the show myself is who you saw at the beginning.

I'm sure you'll find Soon We'll Be Found if the fancy takes you.

Cavalier - yes, that clip makes it look more convincing. You can see the similarity with TB  as they play - in the timing.

That's Viva La Vida... sorry can't here the similarity... however Viva La Vida has been compared to Alizee's "J'en ai marre"

Check out this YouTube mix....

Very very similar to me. Satriani notes with Boutonnat bouncy synth strings. But I noticed we don't all see the same similarities, sometimes you say to someone "this is his double" and the other person thinks you're completely off. Some of us might focus more on the eyes, or more on the rhythm, etc. Or it might be more subtile. But for sure we see and hear different similarities.

The composer's hairstyle is questionable but he knows how to write catchy tunes.

The next Tublarian awards have been canceled, Olivier, so there's no point angling for Herod's award!  :D

You should have done a cover of "Runaway Son", then - someone (it might have been TRCanberra) remarked here once how the vocals in that are like JF's!

Reading this topic, I've come to realise that I take these "similarity" talks with a huge bag of salt. Maybe it's because after the blatant plagiarism Rod Stewart commited with Da Ya Think I'm Sexy, I consider anything not so blatantly obvious as simple pareidolia (even though I may be grossly misusing this term here).
