@ Matt: the Irn Bru ad is indeed very humourous - the way the song starts evokes a certain mood, but then the lyrics say something completely different. :D The imagery reminds me of a Queen video, I'm not telling you which one, you may surely guess it as some of the drawings are nearly identical. BTW, what kind of drink is Irn Bru? Beer? Or something like Red Bull? :)

Irn-Bru, an orange coloured non alcoholic carbonated drink made in Scotland (from girders! - well that was one of their previous advertising campaigns ;) ).

Not really red bull exactly, though it does have a lot of caffiene in it! Maybe more like a cola comparison?

BTW the video, both song and animation style, are a take-off of a stunning sequence from animated short film The Snowman. OK, let's have that as well below :)
The Snowman

Actually, that has a bit of a Mike link since Aled Jones (Pictures in the Dark) did a cover version of the same song whch was very successful, it isn't Aled singing in the clip above however.

And a sworn hangover cure should you fall under the influence of the Bruces!

@ Matt: thanks a lot for the explanation and for the Wikipedia links. I never saw The Snowman - it looks very cool from the excerpt you linked and from Wikipedia's article. Do you know whether it's available on DVD? The animation style in the song sequence still reminds me of Queen's "Save Me" video, maybe because the technique is the same. By the way, is the choirboy who sings the song (Peter Auty) as Scottish as Irn Bru? He's got very pronounced R's... "The rrriver..." :D Wikipedia says he's English. Or maybe do all choirboys sing like that?
Re. Irn Bru, judging from the Wikipedia description, from the colour, and from another ad I found on YouTube which says "It's Ginger!" I think its taste is very like Red Bull, although Irn
Bru is not marketed as an "energy drink". Or is it? The "made from girders" slogan sounds a little bit like that... :)

I've often wondered how did Aled Jones come to work with Mike. Did Mike, while looking for a choirboy, simply stumble upon the best available one at the time, or did someone from Virgin recommend Aled to him?

And lo! where but one YouTube link was needed, two appeared!

I'm not sure how I managed that.  Meanwhile it's pleasant news to realise that generating such clips within the post is merely a matter of putting the appropriate url and address in.  I've now read Matt's technological update in About these forums - I'd assumed you were all using some kind of alchemy to make the pretty pictures appear.

Thanks too to Ugo for your link.  As it happens I was fresh off viewing the Hollywood Bowl performance, having been put in a Python mood, deciding if I should appropriate one of their allusions to the golden nectar, but I left my thought in - thanks again for responding to it.  :D

What's that?  Another video clip, you say?  Oh, go on then...

very amusing Matt, i liked that :)

particularly when snapped his carrot off to take a swig!!!

I shall never look at The Snowman in quite the same way again.

Marvellous!

A song for Bee:

just seen this! brilliant, just brilliant! Clever stuff.
I even found myself swaying very gently as it played...

And to see the Goodies clip again was fab, very silly humour, but hey, life gets way too serious if you let it!

:D

@ Tati: I think Blur did their best stuff in their so-called "Britpop" phase. "Girls and boys" and "Country House" are two of their best videos, IMHO. When they got "rockier" they uniformed to everyone else. But still they did very eye-catching videos, like this one:

Took me a while to get into Sigur Ros, but was worth the wait in the end as their musical style has grown on me.

However, I find that video a bit disturbing to be honest...especially the very last cliff scne and the last child.....

@ Hastengas: the band themselves gave an explanation for the last child in the final scene. According to them, the child was scared of jumping off the cliff in the same way as the others did, and so he jumped like he was diving into water. But in the very last scene of the video you can see that he's flying with the others. Also according to the band, the video was meant to be something quite ordinary and quite scary - which turns into extraordinary and joyful in the very last scene, where the children fly.

@ Tubularman: I talked about High Hopes in another topic. To me, among non-conceptual videos [i.e. videos having almost nothing to do with the song, except maybe in one scene here], this is one of the best ever made.
