"Enigmatism" is among my favorite pieces that Mike has ever composed. I love the way that the counterpoint develops. Overall, I do like the album; besides, it inspired one of the worst jokes I ever made. Actually, it may be the only joke that I ever made. Which, I suppose, makes it the worst one. :D

Why did MO create a work comprised solely of guitars? So he could win the No-Bell prize. :O

The Ballad of Inkanta's Joke

There was a day (we remember well,
The ancient balladeer would tell)
When unsuspecting people who
Were doing their thing, as people do,
Quite unaware of what was coming.
The first they heard was distant drumming
Of thunder, then a flash of light
Streaked the sky and split the night.
'What is it?' people asked, 'and why?'
They strained and looked up to the sky.
But then the Earth began to quake,
Tremble, rumble, wobble, shake!
'Is it the end?' the people cried.
'Will the earth split open wide?'
Then all was silent. People waited,
Anxious, worried, breath all bated.
The recognition soon came after.
'That wasn't thunder! It was laughter!'

'And that's what happened,' the balladeer spoke,
'The day Inkanta told her joke.'

Man, two Tubular.net gems on a row. That's brilliance. I don't care if I sound silly, but I did laugh, guys. :)

My vote goes to "Summit Day", btw; like I described once, Mike Oldfield's own "Fake Plastic Trees".

This reminds me. It seems like an obvious question that might come from those legions who know Oldfield ONLY from the first few minutes of the first "Tubular Bells".

But I've never heard anyone ask "Why is it called 'Tubular Bells'? There are no bells in it!!!!"

I've never really understood why people use the word "suck" to indicate something bad. Anything that I can think of which involves a light suction should be quite pleasureful.

Anyways...

My vaccuum cleaner really sucks.

Favourite track from Guitars, that's a difficult one, I did vote for Four Winds, but now I reckon Out Of Mind is fractionally better:) . Bubbling under are Summit Day, Out Of Sight, B.Blues and Enigmatism. Guitars is a rather underrated album IMHO     :/ .

A potent combination! The official name for it is graughing, I believe. We need a proper smilie for it.

Mmmm.....indeed! Ha ha! Tubular.net could become the first spot in cyberspace to birth the mutant smilie (hmmm....mutant smilies on the run....now there's a scary thought! )  :O  :O

Ha! Do you know I just corrected a typo? Well...of course not...you're not on the board at this moment. :D  I had typed mutant "similies" -- now that really IS scary!

I think that the album is OK, but Four Winds is great.  On repeated listens, the other tracks get boring, but Four Winds does not!

I think Muse is a nice, gentle track. One of my favourites. Guitars just perfectly displays Mike's ability to utilise the instrument as his voice.

I loved this album immediately after the first listening. It's an impressive piece of work and is remarkable that Mike only used guitars to record every sound on it.
I think all the tracks has their particular beauty but my favourite is Four Winds. I like the way it changes and move to the next 'wind'  ;)

Out of Mind. I'm just mad about the way it goes from soft to loud and vice versa. :)

To Alan D. - congrats for your ballad. I wish I could write such good and such funny poetry... ;)

I find that when listening, the tracks are pretty level in quality and enjoyment, all at a high standard

I agree. Years ago, I used to only listen to a few favorites, but these days I'm loving pretty much all of it.
