The former singer of the excellent prog rock group Triumvirat has a voice that doesn't fit in the record...

Barry Palmer was in Triumvirat? I know that name, but I haven't heard any of their music yet. But aren't they from Germany?
And I disagree about the voice not fitting, what's wrong with it?

He was in Triumvirat, and yes, they're from Germany - Mike was introduced to Barry Palmer by Dirk Hohmeyer, who acted as manager for both of them.

I think that his voice works fine on the album, though his voice does sound a little rough as a result of whatever virus he caught at the time. Still, it's rock and roll, I've heard rougher...

I can't agree, Greenback. The songs sung by Barry belong among my favourites. Especially Poison Arrows and Tricks of the Light.

I agree, Discovery is one of my favourite albums of Mikes, and Barry Palmer's voice fits quite well. I really couldn't tell he had a virus, anyway the rough aspect of his voice fits the songs such as Poison Arrows, and Saved by a Bell fits his voice perfectly. I really couldn't imagine anyone else singing these songs.

I like Barry´s voice on Discovery(the album) and also on the Crime of Passion single.
One of my fav tunes he sang lead on it...Poison Arrows.
But I don´t like him singing on Saved by a Bell...uck!

Barry has a voice bit like Ozzy Osbourne in some moments ("tricks of the light") or even Iron Maiden singer!!!!!

but it doesn't mean he is bad for singing MIke's songs.
in my opinion his appearence on "DISCOVERY" makes it one-of-a-kind and special, remember he didn't sung on any of his other albums.

But remember that his version of "When the nights' on fire" (demo) is horrible and awfull.

I don't personally see any problem with Barry's voice either, I liked it in all the songs he sang for Mike. I think it fit well.
The singles on the Discovery album are my favorite Oldfield singles, & Maggie Rielly & Barry Palmer are part of the reason why I love this album.

I LIKED BARRY'S VOICE ON DISCOVERY AND I WOULD LOVE TO GET SOME OF HIS SOLO CDS ON IMPORT.

I enjoyed Barry's vocal performance on Discovery and simply wish he had been around to do the lead vocals on Heaven's Open too  ;)

I was surprised to learn he was with Triumvirate. I have their 1975 release 'Spartacus' but the CD insert and back cover give nothing away.

I think a new version of Discovery is being recorded by Mike with Vocaloid singing along a drum track from a 50-dollar Casio synth.  :D

Hey... don't laugh, it will take at least two or three hours to re-record the whole album that way!  :(

That is one of my favourite Mike songs; this barry demo of When the Nights... It's very moving :)

Discovery is his best album from the 80's I think! And there is no weak song... It's melodic, full of energy, raw and subtle at the same point!  :D
Sorry for praising it so much, but this one means a lot to me!

THE LAKE RULEZZZ

(ps; did you know that barry palmer really dislikes Tricks of the light!;)

I've not heard that, I wonder if we'll get it on Islands Deluxe version?
