XXV is a good "essential" compilation, but what would your "essential" compilations include?

I think I can answer this for you, ChiRho.

i like xxv, but i don't know why they were so little from mike's 3 albums on wea, they could have given us a 10 track best of from the three albums and a couple of unreleased tunes.

XXV is perhaps the one Oldfield related thing that both do not have AND do not intend to get  (unless I find it real cheap). Is there anything on it that is not found elsewhere?

I've only ever seen it once, anyway: at a Virgin Superstore a few years back. The same superstore now carries no Oldfield, and the staff do not know his name.

If elsewhere is taken to mean 'on albums' then yes, there's the Viv Stanshall version of The Bell (which was available on several singles). The excerpt of Tubular Bells III is also unique - it's an in progress version of The Source Of Secrets, which has a fair number of differences to the original.

Apart from that, it's all standard off-the-album, and singles which have been made available on other compilations.

yeah, it's way different than the final "secrets" stuff. Much more *techno* IMHO, not much quality inside. I purchased the CD at the time because of this track.

i think it was a shame that wea did not make xxv a best of using the singles from the three albums he released with them.  from what i can remember there were 10 singles released from the 3 albums.
