Just a quick note to ask if anyone knows who it is actually saying "Happy?" throughout Amarok?

And where did Mike get this idea from?

I'm still not quite sure I understand the "why" of the happies, but it's all good.  A least it doesn't say "sad".

Ah ah, well said!

Anyway, I think that the right approach to "Amarok" should be void of why's... everything there is the result of a free imagination going completely and freely wild.

In that system anything makes sense; toy dogs and guitars can coexist happily... and anyway it is NOT chaos!

But Sunken's remark is really wonderful!  :)

It's just a sample shoved through some kind of vocal effect.Probably Mike.
I like the idea of toy dogs and guitars living in harmony.Add to that the contents of an aeromodeller's toolkit, season with a little punchball and club and celebrate with fake fireworks et voila the perfect society!

The republic of Amarok is born!
or Maybe planet Caveman....population 1.

I may be terribly wrong here, because I'm not familiar with regional English accents, but the voice almost sounds like someone from Lancashire - it's not «Happy?», but rather «'Appy?» with a very open A. The Thatcher impersonator (her name escapes me right now), at the end, says it in what I assume to be standard English, i.e. «Hæpy?», but the other voice sounds really Northern to me. Mike is from Reading, so it can't be him. :) However, it's definitely a sample.

@ Ommagest: more than a Speak and Spell machine, which has of course a very robotic/mechanical voice, I'd say that some artificial speech software may have been used. But, as far as I know, synthesized voices don't have any accent. ;)

Sounds very similar to the voice used in certain parts of 'Songs' like 'The Chamber' or 'Ascension'. It has the same voice tone and that little bit of distorsion, if only the one in 'Songs' seems to be a little bit more reverbered.

Does anybody know where I can obtain a sample of the "happy" sound? I'd like to use it to say Happy Birthday to somebody!

I strongly believe that the question is directed to Richard Branson, who originally hoped for Tubular Bells II. For the same reason, Mike implemented a Morse code in response to the request to go on tour.
