Watched it tonite, from the URL given by Olivier. (With 56k.) Worked quite fine. Results:
- At least two of us got through with their questions:
- Richard Carter got an answer on how The Bell (cover art) was conceived. Very interesting.
- Mat Cochrane got an answer about Music VR & the audio CD. Also informative.
- I like the demo at the end, where Mike shows the possibilities of Music VR. He really takes off!! Esp. the Ants Tunnel: Great sounds! I can't wait to get it. And Mike also tells us what hardware is needed.

Watch the video! The 37 minutes are worth it. -Carsten-

Dear mike:
I watched the interview tonight, after trying to download it for 3 days. I have one thing to say. KNOCK IT OFF SUNSHINE...... You're killing me over here. You DON'T need it. Be brave and throw it out. If anyone can get this message to Mike? Please do so.
This has nothing to do with Mike's projects.

Hey Stuart, it's better not to be a clotheared, like you wink!
I saw the interview. I heard the different kind of music in the project, and I like it. I saw the possibilities of this MVR. (- And I load and played the demo also - it's cca only 0,001% of the whole MVR world, isn't it Mike? smile)
And I have just one more argument which I heard somewhere here: what happened after the Earthmoving album? Mike published Amarok...
So wait patiently to the next album if you don't like this! wink

Isn't Mike's "next album" goin' to be that famous re-recording of TB? smile

My comments were nothing to do with the music or any of the projects. It was based on something else I saw in the interview and didn't like one bit. I shouldn't have ranted like I did, but I was very upset at the time. My sincere apologies if I offended anyone, but I had to get it off my chest.

I think I know what Stuart means...I may of course be thinking along completely different lines though.

'The Best Of Tubular Bells'. It really is time that Oldfield tried producing new music rather than living off the revamped/re-released Tubular Bells, over and over again. What was a wonderful Album is now sullied by Oldfield's blatant commercialism. A beauty turned to a whore.

We must remember that 'The Best of Tubular Bells' is the creation of Virgin Records, not Mike Oldfield. As far as I know, the copyright to Tubular Bells is actually owned by Virgin - that means they can do whatever they like with it, without having to ask Mike at all. Mike does seem to have co-operated with Virgin on the release of the album, but that could of course be part of an "if you can't beat them, join them" type attitude.

A discussion with some other people showed that we're quite lucky as far as 'Best of' type compilations go with Mike - some artists apparently have many more, often with almost identical track listings (I must say, I've seen a lot of Eric Clapton compilations around).

Mike seems to be enjoying the attention he's getting from the release of the compilation, however.

The copyright thing also doesn't account for TB2, 3 and plans for the re-recorded Tubular Bells...

Back to topic! (Don't be angry at me, guys...) I learned from the Amarok Mailing List that Olivier also got through with a question to the Webchat.
Now, which question was it, and which answer did he get?

"What is the latest instrument you bought?"
Then Mike replies, tunes it, and plays a very short demo on it... So in a way, thanks to my question, we have a new minor rarity. wink

Dear Korgscrew:
Thank you for your supportive post. I have been a lifelong fan of MO since the release of TB in 73, such a fan in fact that my needing to know more has led me on a lifelong adventure. As I write this reply I am sitting in a hotel room in Robinsonville Mississippi, having just finished mixing a show for an artist that has made some of most classic recordings of all time. After the show I went on a late night sight seeing tour of the Mississippi delta and wound up at the crossroads where Robert Johnson had his ledgendary encounter. It was a deeply moving trip. I wouldn't be making that trip, if I was indeed a CLOTHE EARED IDIOT as has been suggested. I tend to think that you and I saw the same thing and it breaks my heart BIG TIME, hence my outburst and the plea to Mike.
I would like to leave it at that and thank you once more.

Best wishes.
Stuart Breed

Actually Stuart, I doubt that many of us have any idea what you were complaining about (you still haven't explained it clearly). If your going to post that kind of ranting, at least tell us your reason for doing so.

OK. More seriously again.
'New minor rarity': In my listening, Mike plays an E-major chord in 4th fret position. Then he tunes the guitar, changing to a G-sharp-minor chord, also in 4th-fret position. Doing some arpeggios, starting with the thinnest string. Moving down on the bass strings. Anyone want to make a tab? (Well, maybe this is all unimportant...) -Carsten-

Note that the open 'e' strings are actually tuned to G# (is that what you meant, Carsten?)...

I wouldn't say it's worth tabbing myself - Mike's just playing the first few chords that come into his head. Maybe it's important because of that - an insight into the musical subconscious of Mike Oldfield...(you can treat that as serious or as a joke, depending on your own views wink ).

Dear Rosko:
I'm sorry to be enigmatic and as I said in my last post, I wish to leave the matter at that.
I was wrong to rant like I did, even more so I hope I'm wrong about my reason for the rant, I truley do hope I am wrong.

Best wishes.

Yes Korgscrew, the highest note I hear is definitely G#, and the 1st chord is E. So I thought it was 4th fret. But I can't actually see what Mike's left hand is doing. Might well be open strings. I know nothing about open tunings. But the 2nd chord is quite surely g#m. That means, the note E is replaced by D#, everthing else stays the same. And then some arpeggios. -Carsten-

I just saw it (well, due to my connection, I more or less had to just listen to it while still images showed up once every 20 seconds :-). It was informative, although I wish more questions could've been answered...specifically, mine haha.

I would've given a completely different answer as to why TB1 was so influential: compared to what everyone else was doing back then, TB was a taste of something different. It was new, refershing and didn't really fit into anything that had been done in the past. Personally, I just think it's unfair that Mike is ONLY known for that one album! I mean, why couldn't Virgin have done a singles compilation instead of rehashing TB yet again?

But by far, I enjoyed the quick tour of MVR the most in that entire thing. By the time he was finished, I said, "I gotta get this!!" Too bad my comp won't handle it at the moment...*sigghh*

I enjoyed that webchat. It helped me see Mike as more of a "person" than a "music man." But next time he does this...more questions please ;-)...and maybe even a longer tour. Can't wait until I get a comp that'll handle MVR!

First of all I want to say hi to all the regulars on the forums. This is my first post here.

Second, I saw the interview and totally agree with the preceding post: it's interesting to see and hear Mike as a person, not as a music maker. Also I thought the whole athmosphere was very relaxed and the presentation of MVR was downright contagious.

Funny thing, MVR. When it first came out, when you could first see the screenshots it was rather unspectacular. To be honest, graphically it still looks a bit inferior to a lot of contemporary games. But every iteration, every new piece that we get to see, the graphics seem to be improving a lot (as does the website, by the way). Aside from that, it's the whole experience that counts and the audiovisual total looks and sounds quite stunning.

I especially loved what happened in the interview when you followed the owl down the tunnel.

So - when's the next web interview? smile
