Kevin Ayers has died at his home in France, aged 68.

Kevin was an influential figure in Mike's early career, when Mike played bass in his band The Whole World. He later guested on Flying Start from 1987's Islands.

Many media outlets have published full obituaries, including The Guardian.

Thanks, Lars Tängmark

Mike played also fine parts of guitar on a couple of tracks on whatevershebringswesing

So now most of the line up of Kevein Ayers & the Whole World are gone... Lol Coxhill, David Bedford, Kevin & not to mention William Murray who joined later.

Very sad news, indeed. My heart and thoughts go out to his family and friends. That band in heaven/summerlands is ever-increasing in size.  :/

Now that's a shame. Another true artist gone.
I really loved his voice and I'll miss him...

Wow! I was just listening to "O What a Dream" on my way home, thinking how brilliant this man is, then I get back and hear he has passed on! So sad - a bright light in music has gone out but he has left much light in his music :-)

His music appeals to old and young alike. My 9-year old son adores "O What a Dream", "Carribean Moon" and "The Hat Song Live Version (Bonus)" as indeed do I. I have collected almost his entire catalogue so will be taking time to listen afresh to his masterpieces......

Aaaaah damnit. :-( so sad to hear this. As with David Bedford, Tim Cross, Pierre Moerlen and Morris Pert he died way too soon. Rest in Peace Kevin!

One of the last musical genius of his generation...one of my few musical heroes.
He has written true masterpieces...have a listen at the Dr Dream Suite, Jolie Madame (with Bridget St John), Lady Rachael, Whatevershebringswesing,...
He will be really missed by a whole generation of artists,...I hope Mike O. will write a few words to pay tribute to one of his musical mentors.

An admirer, and if I never changed up to a devotee, I earned kudos a couple of times when others witnessed me perusing his section in larger music stores.

I was blissfully catching up with sleep on Sunday, so blissfully forgot that Stuart Maconie was due to pay tribute in his Freak Zone.  He did, by playing tracks from whatevershebringswesing (three with Mike playing) and speaking to Robert Wyatt.  Mike gets a mention after Champagne Cowboy Blues, but it's Kevin who shines throughout, bless him.  iPlayer 'til Sunday the 10th.
