Cheer up people! I know there is a lot of debate about the reissues and when MikeOldfield.com will be back on line. Universal are working on it. Maybe a new format in line with the reissues. He does own a home in the Bahamas with studio, so no the boat is not his only place to work. The vessel is for them to escape the gossip, media and speculation and allow them their privacy. Mike doesn't have to answer to anyone 24/7. The same as us. Let the Oldfield's enjoy their lives. He gave time to the media last year, thats more than enough. Silence? Why not? He is still doing these albums, so acknowledging his fan base., no point pitching his music without fans is there. Lets be patient, not speculate or concentrate on bits from interviews that are negative.

Could anyone explain me what's the point in building a studio on a boat (given the average Oldfield studios cost at least twice the price of his boat) if you only aim to listen to silence?

I have to agree. You wouldn't spend that much just to do the remix/re-issues i wouldn't have thought.Musicians of Mike's calibre as a rule never give up writing music. It's in his blood.I'm sure there will be something more coming up at some point.Perhaps something naughtical (i am so sure i spelt that wrong)given his recent life.Perhaps QE2 2.

Well I believe in the article it said Mike had a porta-studio, this could mean anything from a four-track tape machine (very unlikely!;)), to a lap-top computer with a built in sound-card. Either way probably not much fuss or expense involved and could quite easily be something he could re-mix with.

I said - "Mike doesn't fancy music anymore" - Proof please.

Quote (Pat Gleeson @ Feb. 09 2010, 22:26)
Regarding Mike not fancying music anymore, I quote the Q Magazine interview introduction from last year:

>>The boat, recently purchased second hand for two million, is now his permanent home for him and his family: his second wife Fanny, two children, her nanny and a field spaniel named Fluff. ... There is a portable studio on the boat, but Oldfield has no plans to create more music and has little interest in the work of other artists. "I hate music," he says.
"The complete and total silence is my favorite music.">>

Of course, Mike could change his mind tomorrow ...

:)

Fair point! Let's hope you are right about him changing his mind :)

Yep there's nothing better than silence to remind you how good music is; a heron is white until seen against the snow.

Just got from Amarok list:

The Word Magazine frequently have some very interesting interviews, but one bit in particular jumped out at me as possibly being of interest here.

http://bit.ly/7hBP1u
or
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content....robably

They interview Phil Smee who (mostly) designs, annotates and helps compile re-issues of albums. About 32'40 in, Phil mentions that he is "currently working with Mark Powell on Mike Oldfield stuff and "he's found demos, all sorts of things..."

Sounds interesting, I just hope that they all get released in some shape or form.

Matthew Cochrane

Phil Smee (Waldo's Design & Dream Emporium - artwork package and design), Mark Powell (master tape research, artist liaison ) and Paschal Byrne (The Audio Archiving Company, London - 24-bit digital remastering) have already worked on a couple of reissues of Oldfield-related material including Kevin Ayers material, Pekka Pohjola (The Mathematicians Air Display) and Faerie Symphony by Tom Newman.

Mark Powell is a freelance catalogue consultant who used to work as the manager of a Mastering studio in London and also as a freelance music journalist writing for magazines such as RECORD COLLECTOR and various specialist publications in the USA, UK and Europe. His passion about great Classic, Progressive & Psychedelic Rock led him to begin work as a freelance consultant on back catalogue projects with Universal Music UK, beginning with the remastering of the CARAVAN catalogue. From their it grew, until he was also invited by EMI to look into their HARVEST, VIRGIN &  CHARISMA catalogues. This work also led to approaches by SONY BMG UK and SANCTUARY MUSIC in the UK. Alongside this he is label manager for ESOTERIC RECORDINGS, a newly established label which is part of the CHERRY RED GROUP.

Sailing the beautiful Islands surrounding the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Mexico would definitely be inspiring. All that healthy sea air and freedom to weigh anchor and go where your spirit takes you! Sounds good. Caveman you could be right. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Aaarrgh me hearties, wanna parly?

I suppose I've already mentioned it somewhere, but as far as I see silence is quite possibly the best way to start with, if you want to reach your musical creativity. At least, in my case, if I don't listen to any music for some days, new melodies begin forming in my head. So I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

Of course, how much effort Mike takes to realize those ideas is another question. It must have been his passion to realize his musical ideas in their most accurate form, and now other things are more important to him, but I'm almost sure he still has new melodies in his head, so I think it's only a question of intention, patience and care in his case. I'm not sure he wants to deal with it anymore, but I'm not sure of the opposite, either.

Anyway, he already has enough music to choose from to fill a day with them. :)

Fluff is a cute dog. At sea I wonder where he does his dodos. Does he have a doggy tray like a cat? You know how dogs smell when they get wet! And the farts after eating lamb! The family probably say "not again Fluff, phew" enough to distract the keenest muso!

You can hear bits of it on the All You Need Is Love section with Mike.He sits there mubblimg about bits having disappeared (go on You Tube as it can be viewed there). To be honest it doesn't sound all that good. Also i doubt he still has it as the tape was shagged by all accounts so he probably binned it.

That's one of the problems i found with the book. The lack of tech talk.I'm a guitarist and i was hoping for more tech stuff. But he does talk about the problems with Ommadawn.

The more inspiration you get, the more you waste it using Fruity Loops Studio and adding some slightly sampled electric guitars.

Well let's see what happens, the Ommadawn demos survived long enough to make it onto the Reflections film soundtrack and that came out two years after Ommadawn. Well worth a watch I can tell you, there's some music on that film which hasn't been released in any shape or form at all.
